From Lesson 7.1 · The Stories We Tell About Each Other

First, notice the story.

In this part of the course, Daniel looks at the difference between what a partner does and the meaning we quickly attach to it. These selected passages are from the existing lesson:

We conclude what our partner thinks or feels without checking — and then respond to our conclusion instead of to them.

Here’s the tell that a story is running: certainty. When you know why they did it — without asking — you are reading your own manuscript. Real people are checked with questions; characters are simply narrated.

— Daniel A. Burgess, Lesson 7.1. Selected excerpts; the complete lesson remains part of the paid course.

From G.O. 7 · The Generous Interpretation Log

Try the first two columns.

Choose one ordinary, low-stakes misunderstanding. Use your own paper or private notes; there is no form to submit your answers here.

1. The event

Daniel’s prompt: “just the facts, as a camera would record them.”

Example from the course: “He came home and went straight to his phone.”

Write one brief observation from your own example.

2. My automatic story

Daniel’s prompt: “what your narrator instantly said.”

Example from the course: “I don’t matter enough to greet.”

Write the meaning you immediately attached to the event.

For this preview, stop after these first two columns. The full exercise continues with other possible interpretations, a chosen action, and a week of practice. You do not need to complete the full log to explore this sample.

Use an everyday misunderstanding for this reflection. It is not a way to dismiss threats, coercion, or harm.
